Quick Guide: Facial Oil Hype

30/04/2018

No matter where we are, we kept hearing about face oils!

Almost everyone is saying good things about them. We are tempted to buy one.

So we did a little digging and came out with this guide:

Drunk Elephant

Virgin Marula Luxury Facial Oil

 facialoil_drunkelephant

What does it do?

It moisturizes, nourishes, soothes, and rejuvenates your skin. Also, it makes you look younger.

Is it good for my skin?

It suits all skin types—including the most sensitive.

Why are people so obsessed with it?

Taken straight from Marula fruit, it’s natural. The formula doesn’t add the 6 ingredients which are not healthy for your skin (the list: essential oils, fragrance/dyes, silicones, SLS, chemical sunscreens and drying alcohols).

“I formulated my products without them and I think this is what sets my line apart… I literally couldn’t find one single brand that didn’t use at least one or more of them. I use synthetics and naturals and I feel that my products are every bit as good and effective as the most expensive dermatologist office brands, and maybe even better because they don’t contain ingredients that will hinder their performance. A product is only as good as its worst ingredient,” said the founder Tiffany Masterson as quoted by Vanity Fair,

“I believe skin types such as sensitive, acne-prone, oily, dry, combination and others are created by the marketing ingredients we are using every day. Skin is skin, it all functions the same and if we let it do what it knows how to do, it will thrive.”

How to apply?

Apply twice a day. Morning and night.

How much is it?

$ 40.00 per 15 mL

You can get it at Sephora.

Vintners Daughters

What does it do?

Feeding your skin all the nutrients, vitamins, and minerals it needs to heal. As a result, your skin will become more clear, even-toned, firm and radiant.

People told the founder April Gargiulo that the oil works really well so they have no problem going bare-faced. The Cut’s editor loves the oil so much, claiming it makes her skin “glow.”

Is it good for my skin?

It’s not for sensitive skin. A few reviews suggest buying the sample first.

Why are people so obsessed with it?

It’s a one-stop-serum, meaning, if you use this serum, you don’t need to use anything else anymore. No wonder. It’s a combination of over 22 botanicals. Most face oils contain less than 10.

“We have 22 ingredients, but if you looked at our constituents, all of the antioxidants and vitamins and minerals, it’s actually over 80,” said Gargiulo as quoted by The Cut.

How to apply?

Apply the serum twice a day (morning and night) to your cleansed and toned skin.

How much is it?

$ 72.00 per 15 mL

You can get it at Sephora.

Farsali Unicorn Essence

 facialoil_farsaliunicornessence

What does it do?

It doubles as serum and makeup primer. Besides moisturizing, keeping age off your skin, and protecting it from free radical damage, the essence also makes your makeup stay longer on your face.

Is it good for my skin?

Suitable for all types of skin, including oily and sensitive/ acne-prone types.

Why are people so obsessed with it?

It is loaded with four superfruit extracts that are full of antioxidants—known for their anti-aging properties. Plus, it looks pretty magical on pictures. Beauty bloggers everywhere promote it. So, yeah, it’s pretty hyped up.

How to apply?

Apply twice a day (morning & evening) before makeup. You can also use it for eyeshadow primer (apply a small amount to the lid to prevent your eyeshadow from creasing) and highlight enhancer (apply on the top of your cheekbones).

How much is it?

$ 54.00 per 30 mL

You can get it at Sephora.

The budget-friendly option

If you don’t feel like spending a ton of your money on oils, we found other alternatives for you. We scrolled all over a beauty blog, Crunchy Betty and found a simple 3-ingredient recipe.

You can make it yourself!

Basically, it’s mixing and matching 3 oils ( 2/3 bottle of base oil, a  1/3 bottle of carrier oil, and 4-7 drops of essential oils) which suit your skin and shaking it up before using. It’s that simple.

Betty recommends using argan oil and/or jojoba oil as your base as they are very light, not greasy, and great for every skin type.

Ok, moving on. Elle wrote the best mix of carrier and essentials for each skin problem. Here’s a summary:

Dry skin: avocado oil as the carrier + rose oil as the essential

Oily skin: jojoba oil as the carrier + clary sage oil as the essential

Acne-prone skin: grapeseed oil as the carrier + tea tree oil as the essential

Large pores: pomegranate oil as the carrier + lemon as the essential

Where can I get the ingredients?

At first, we’re a bit skeptical. We’re not sure if we can find the ingredients in Indonesia. Then, we did a little more digging and found the ingredients on Tokopedia. Roughly, a small bottle costs less than IDR 400k.

You’re welcome.
