You might have read a couple of Danica Gim’s poetries. If you’re following most of Instagram’s poetry community, you might be following her right now. Her poetries are so good. She’s one of the poets out there! A few months ago, she just released her poetry book. It’s called Morningstar Musings. You can get it here.
Upon reading her poems for quite a while, we figured that Danica would be fun to have girl talks with. So, we reached out to her!
Between taking flights and writing, Danica caught up with us.
Here’s how it went:
As a flight attendant, you must’ve traveled a lot. What are your favorite places so far?
My favorite places so far have been Bangkok and Capetown! Bangkok was my very first flight and my very first experience with Asia. The city and the people and even the heat were all magical to me and I was there with a friend, making the experience even more fun!
In Capetown, I cycled around near the ocean with upcycles, I did a wine tour, tasted the most amazing olive oils that have ever touched my lips, and did an attempt to climb a lion's head (it was too windy and I was not prepared clothing wise at all, whoops).
This week I'm leaving to Buenos Aires for 7 days, so I can't wait to see what adventures I'll have there!
What’s always on your travel bag?
I always bring a poetry book, even when I don't read it. There's always one in my bag. Besides that, I have a little flight attendant survival kit.
Have you ever write a piece inspired by a place you visited? If so, can you share it with us?
I think I wrote the most poetries in Capetown. It was just such an inspiring place. I think I even wrote a poem about wine, I tried to find it but I have no clue where it is! I wrote the poem 'Red Pants' there too, which you can find in my poetry book 'Morningstar Musings'. I did recently write a poem after looking outside the airplane window and watching the most stunning sunset.
Red and orange make love
on the night's canvas and
they give birth to colors I have
not seen before and yet remind
me of a place, a time, a life that
might have been mine.
Can you share a poetry you wrote? What’s the story behind it?
This one is a personal favorite of mine. It's called 'Bookstore' and you can also find it in 'Morningstar Musings'. I wrote it in Los Angeles while walking through this beautiful bookstore with the man I love, as we were just getting to know each other. We come from two completely different worlds, with our homes literally being oceans apart. It's safe to say things were looking complicated for us. But at that moment, I also realized that this was something beyond special and there was no way to recover from it.
I watched him walk through a thousand stories.
I followed how his fingertips briefly touched the
back of other worlds.
I stared as he moved from tragedy, to history,
from history, to poetry.
And suddenly I understood every love story
ever written, understood each poem's sweet
agony.
In that moment I realized what it was like to
have two souls collide with such an impact
that you can still taste their stardust from a
distance.
Can you share the best poetry you’ve ever read?
That's a hard one, there is so much good poetry out there that has touched and shaped me. When I was younger I read a lot of Ingrid Jonker and my favorite poem will always be:
I repeat you
Without beginning or end,
I repeat your body.
The day has a thin shadow
and the night yellow crosses
the landscape without regard
and the people a row candles
while I repeat you
with my breasts
that reforms the hollows of your hands
Any Insta-poet accounts you’d recommend?
Oh yes, there are some amazing Insta-poets out there! I highly recommend you check out Lauren Eden, AN Moore, Nikita Gill, Rupi Kaur (obviously), Otthilia Poetria and there are so much more incredible talents out there. I honestly could go on and on! I suggest you all dive into the Instagram poetry experience and discover them!
What’s the best writing advice you’ve ever heard?
Write as if no one will ever read it. I think we are all always so worried what people think that we are afraid to write what we truly feel sometimes. Afraid that people won't like it, that we'll make mistakes, that we'll upset others. It can really hold you back sometimes. So write for yourself and yourself alone, that's when the best pieces are born.
What’s the best life advice you’ve ever heard?
Be honest in how you feel and in what you think and don't be afraid to share your emotions. It might sound simple but I can't stress enough how much easier my life got when I stopped hiding things to make sure I wouldn't step on people's toes. It is ok to admit you need help, it's ok to admit you don't agree with someone- even when you love them dearly, it's ok to be honest even when it might hurt someone else's feelings. I'm not saying to go out and deliberately start spreading hurtful opinions or to call your friend and tell her you might not like her choice of clothes after all, but sometimes we lie to people we love because we think we can prevent them from getting hurt. But this will get them way more hurt in the long run. Don't play games, be real, be you, don't be afraid to share how you feel. If that's too much for people to handle, you can do without them in your life.
Take a look at our collection (www.wearstatuquo.com), which outfits you‘d love to wear when you go out?
The Vintage Fleur Dress is so absolutely gorgeous!! You could wear it on a beach day, a night out, a wedding depending how you style it. I'm in love! And I need the Les Vacances Jumpsuit in my suitcase for every sunny destination!
